Ossi Malmberg works for the Academy of Finland, which comprises the three Finnish Research Councils that promote and fund scientific research. He is Vice-President for Administration, responsible for finance, personnel, communication, IT and legal matters. Researchers’ applications for research grants are reviewed and rated by external experts, and grants are awarded by the Councils, based on competition. Funding is spent by universities and other research institutions in Finland. The Academy of Finland also supports the development of science infrastructures and is responsible for the Finnish contribution to CERN.

Having obtained an M.Sc. in Forestry and an LL.M. degree from the University of Helsinki, he joined the Central Forestry Board TAPIO, an organisation that promotes private forestry and supervises the Regional Forestry Boards. In 1991, he was granted a year’s leave of absence to work for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome. In 2004, he entered the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs to work as Legal Adviser for Development Cooperation. In 2008, he was appointed to his current post.

Since 2008, he has been a frequent visitor to CERN as a Finnish delegate to the Finance Committee. He has also been a Council Member since July 2019. He chaired the CERN Finance Committee and the CERN Audit Committee for three years from 2017 to 2019.
